Physical and Mental Function of the Aged

Abstract

|
Geriatric psychiatry gives us the information for the understanding not only of the disorder of the aged per se but also of the result of the presumed mechanism of the disorder such as previous well functioning of late onset schizophrenia or
catecholamine hypothesis of depression. In order to understand the pathology of the aged, normal aging process should be identified. The author described the aging process of the physical function with the prospect of the clinical conditions. In
addition, psychological function of the aged was introduced encompassing the changes of the cognitive function, personality and emotions. With these individual changes of the aged, sociocultural changes should be considered in order to understand
the
human as a whole. The state of health and the social bias toward the mental and physical health of the aged is described. Finally the author suggested the alternative solution of the problem of the aged via the traditional eastern attitude toward
the
aged.
